No Shared History Weekend Writing Warriors

Warriors logo revisedI’m taking snippets from my most recently released scifi romance Timtur: The Teacher’s Alien Healer (Badari Warriors) this week.  (GABE just went to the formatter so it’ll be out soon, by the way.)

If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors books, here’s the background:

Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens. The luckiest Badari find their mates among the humans.

The alien scientists never bothered to create female Badari.

The excerpt – The pack Alpha, who is mated to a human, tries to answer Timtur’s question from last week about whether it’s possible to balance his duties with having a mate:

“I refuse to believe the goddess would send the human women to this planet at the very time, the first time in eight hundred years we’ve been able to enter into pair bonds as free men, and then expect you, of all people, to resist her gift. The Great Mother, as I understand her, isn’t a jealous or a capricious deity. I think she wants us to live. And mating and having children is the essence of life. She may even be counting on you to help show the way for others. A balance in all things is called for, true, but serving the needs of the pack and being a fully committed mate can be done.”

“Those are my hopes as well, but I take my duty to the pack so deeply,” Timtur remembered the interrupted picnic, when he’d left Lily and rushed off to care for the injured Badari soldiers. He still believed that was the right action at the time but now he could see he should have paused to reassure Lily he wanted to continue their conversation as soon as he could return to her. They had so little shared history, no deep understanding of each other’s life experiences, which he now saw was a lack he needed to rectify – the human life in the Sectors and his existence as a captive in the labs were so removed from each other that of course she had no instinctive comprehension of his pack bonds.

The Badari had no mating rituals and he’d no idea what courting behaviors a human woman might expect.

TimturFinalThe blurb:

Far from her home in the human Sectors after the mass kidnapping, teacher Lily Garrison is making a niche for herself in the valley by running a school for the Badari young. Although she yearns for Timtur, the pack’s healer, another Badari male has his eye on her and won’t take no for an answer.

Timtur feels the weight and responsibility of being the pack’s only healer, constantly on call as the soldiers fight ferocious battles against the alien scientists and their troops. With scarcely a moment to himself, he’s drawn to the gentle Lily but worries he won’t be able to juggle his duties, his loyalty to the pack and a relationship with a human woman.

When Lily’s stalker takes direct action to kidnap her and steal her from the safety of the valley, she’s forced to reach deep inside to find the strength to battle for her life. Timtur realizes too late how foolish he’s been to resist the bond with his fated mate and leads the rescue effort.

Before this situation can be resolved both will have to put their lives on the line and decide what really matters in a dangerous world ruled by the enemy.

Heavy Responsibilities Weekend Writing Warriors

Warriors logo revisedI’m switching to my newly released scifi romance Timtur: The Teacher’s Alien Healer (Badari Warriors) this week. (The first book in the series, AYDARR, just won the I Heart Indie contest for SciFi & Fantasy by the way!)

Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens. The luckiest Badari find their mates among the humans.

Lily and Timtur are having a hard time moving from being friends to a deeper relationship. Here Timtur talks to Aydarr, the pack’s Alpha about his misgivings and seeks advice. Aydarr has a human mate.

The excerpt:

Pulling vulnerable emotions out of his heart and putting words to them was like standing naked and declawed in a vermore pit while the poisonous creatures crawled over him.  Talking about his deepest emotions and vulnerabilities wasn’t something he was used to doing at all. Even as he had the thought, he took himself to task. Lily wouldn’t hurt him by being cruel, even if she didn’t accept his proposal to be mates. But if he worked up the courage to ask her his question and she said no, he didn’t know how he’d go on. She was as essential to him as air to breathe.

He fell back on the primary issue confusing him—duty to his pack and to the goddess. Timtur decided to keep the emotional jeopardy he felt in broaching the topic with Lily in reserve. Maybe he wouldn’t have to explain himself on that score, depending what Aydarr counseled. “You said it yourself, earlier: I’m the one in our generation who speaks to the goddess, keeps the traditions aligned, carries the messages of the ancestral memory to those who follow.”

“Heavy responsibilities…”

Ghost of the Nile Weekend Writing Warriors

Warriors logo revisedIn honor of Halloween coming this week, I’m going to my award winning Ghost of the Nile from 2015for today’s excerpt. It’s an unusual ghost story!

The excerpt – my hero gets bad news in the afterlife from the goddess Ma’at, who is speaking as the excerpt starts:

“I’m also a seeker of justice and balance, one who rights wrongs. I’m the goddess of second chances for the human race,” She raised her elegant eyebrows, “Although such chances are few and far between.”

Despite the warmth of the brightly lit room, a shiver worked its way down Periseneb’s spine, “You wish to right the wrong of my murder? Bring my murderer to account for the crime?”

She shook her head, the golden beads in her wig chiming like little bells, “Your death is done, past, woven into the fabric of life in the upper world these two-hundred years and more.”

He staggered, locking one hand on the edge of the table to steady himself, “So long?”

“Time here and time there run differently, warrior. Only the Nile remains unchanging.” She moved to the black-and-gold chair, seating herself and leaning against the richly decorated back, “Yet, your death is connected in a way to events now.” Ma’at nodded her head as if some decision had been reached, “I need a champion.”

GhostOfTheNile_highresThe story:

1550 BCE

Betrayed, murdered, and buried without proper ceremony, Egyptian warrior Periseneb is doomed to roam the gray deserts of the dead as a ghost for all eternity.

But then the goddess of truth offers him a bargain: return to the world of the living as her champion for 30 days. If he completes his mission, he’ll be guaranteed entry into Paradise. Periseneb agrees to the bargain but, when he returns to the living world, two hundred years have passed and nothing is quite as he expected.

Neithamun is a woman fighting to hang onto her family’s estate against an unscrupulous nobleman who desires the land as well as the lady. All seems lost until a mysterious yet appealing ex-soldier, Periseneb, appears out of nowhere to help her fight off the noble’s repeated attacks.

Meanwhile, Periseneb’s thirty days are rushing by, and he’s powerless against the growing attraction between himself and Neithamun. But their love can never be. For his Fate is to return to the Afterlife, and Death cannot wed with Life…

The excerpt – I promised to include some of the dancing in a snippet, so here’s a bit from the audition. Micki is a girl who befriends Tassia during the long day of auditioning:

By the time her turn came, Tassia decided to do a sequential series of rapid steps, pirouettes and showy poses requiring supremely good balance, which she could fit to the music being provided. It was her observation from watching the judges that dancers who showed technical skills appeared to make more of a favorable impression than the ones who did flashy, sexy moves. She walked confidently to her designated spot on the temporary wooden dance floor, assumed the opening pose and launched into her routine as the first notes sounded. Remembering to smile as if her audience was composed of her best friends, she had no clear memory of the two minutes when she finished with a graceful final pose. As she walked from the space, she believed she’d done well.

“Wow, you’re something else,” Micki grabbed her by the elbow. Micki had been one of the candidates demonstrating spins and beautiful extensions, combined with sexy shimmies, “Where the seven hells did you train?”

“Private tutors when I was a kid,” Tassia said vaguely, “Did I look all right, compared to the others?”

Micki laughed, “Miss High and Mighty Director never took her eyes off you. I’d say you’re clear to the semifinals at least.”

STAR CRUISE: MYSTERY DANCER blurb:  Tassia Megg is a woman on the run after the death of her elderly guardian. Her search to get off the planet in a hurry comes when chance directs her to an open dance audition for the luxury cruise liner Nebula Zephyr’s resident troupe. If there is one thing Tassia can do, it is dance!

Security Officer Liam Austin is suspicious of the newest performer to join the Comettes. She shows all the signs of being a woman on the run and seems to fit the Sectors-wide broadcast description of a missing thief, accused of stealing priceless artifacts. As he gets to know Tassia during the cruise, he starts to wonder if she’s something more – a long vanished princess in hiding from deadly political enemies of her family perhaps? And what’s the story with the three-eyed feline companion other crew members swear Tassia brought aboard the ship? Does the animal even exist?

As the ship approaches its next port of call, all the issues come to a boil and Liam must decide if he’ll step in to help Tassia or betray her. Life is about to get very interesting aboard the Nebula Zephyr as Liam tries to uncover the truth. Could F’rrh, the peculiar alien cat he has been hearing about, be the key to the mystery and Tassia’s fate?

The excerpt – Broke and alone, Tassia is on the run from assassins and has asked her genie-like companion for a way off the planet.:

She flinched against the padded seat as a vision thudded into her head. She saw the announcement board at the neighborhood dance studio, and as she held her breath, the vision focused in on one message in particular. She’d paid it no attention at all earlier in the evening.

Nebula Zephyr Comettes seeking fill in dancers for cruise to Dyenbachar Five – All expenses paid, union salary, must have experience.

The open auditions were tomorrow morning, in a hotel complex adjacent to the spaceport.

Could escape be that easy? But what did she know about dancing for a popular revue? Her training was classical, with odd bits of folk dance acquired over the years.

As the robo cab deposited her outside the bustling spaceport, Tassia clutched her backpack with trembling hands, determination putting steel into her frame. If the audition announcement was what the vision had shown her, this was her only chance, success not guaranteed.

The excerpt (Tassia’s elderly companion has been murdered, she escaped but  her problems still abound so she asks her companion F’rrh for help. F’rrh is a little like an alien genie.):

What am I going to do? How am I going to get off this damn planet?

She had Sectors citizenship papers, as phony as could be, but perfect forgeries right down to the holo seal. Xandrina had spent the bulk of their funds on obtaining the precious documents for both of them. But their carefully hoarded credits had run out after the flight to this world cost more than expected due to enemy disruption of shipping lanes and Tassia’s ultimate destination lay many lightyears away in the next Sector, out of reach.

When she thought she was far enough from the hotel, she hailed a robo cab and headed for the spaceport. Sitting in the back of the tiny vehicle, she opened the pack a fraction, slid her hand inside and rubbed the top of the shiny, lacquered box, opening the lid a fraction. I need a way to get offworld for free.

For a moment nothing happened as she touched the box, and Tassia’s heart sank.

The excerpt:

“The old world is gone—when will you accept the reality?” Massaging her temples as she and her companion revisited this familiar argument, Tassia couldn’t whip up much energy for the conversation, “There will never be a chance for me to become a high priestess of Normeia, much less to sit on the Fire Throne and show how I can make the magic flames dance at my command. We need to deal with what is, not what you wish would happen. The Ruatsar system doesn’t even belong to our  family any more.”

“As long as you live, the bloodline lives,” Xandrina was stubborn.

Tassia bit her lip and went to get the stew before it grew stone cold, “Here, Madame, you must have something to eat.”

Xandrina waved away the bowl impatiently with one claw-like hand, “Show me what you learned today.”

“Are you crying? Madame, what’s wrong – are you in pain?”

“Our roads part now,” the elderly woman said, sniffing, “I read the cards three times while you were at class – death approaches, for myself certainly, for us both if you don’t leave now, tonight.”

Hand shaking, Tassia set her half eaten food aside, “The Ruatsar New Regime agents found us again?”

Nightmare Not A Dream Weekend Writing Warriors

Warriors logo revisedSharing from AYDARR, the first book in my Badari Warriors scifi romance series…

The excerpt:

A bolt of lightning arced across the sky, and Jill broke into a zigzag run, forcing her body to respond to her terror. Standing anywhere close to a giant tree in a thunder storm was a recipe for disaster.

I’m in a nightmare, not a dream, but it’s all too real. In her headlong flight, she stepped on a rock or a sharp root and cried out, but she kept going as thunder boomed. She had to find either a stand of small trees surrounded by taller ones or a ravine. Of course, an actual shelter would be better than either of those make-do options but probably too much to hope for.

Running full tilt, ignoring the pain from her foot, she suddenly slammed into an invisible barrier and bounced off, falling on her back. Cautiously she rose, extending her arms –  the barrier was a tingling against her palms. She tried going right then left, but the wall ran for quite some distance in both directions. Being in an invisible cage was the most unsettling thing since she’d awakened, especially when coupled with the bracelet affixed to her arm.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00068]The blurb:

Jill Garrison, a maintenance tech at the Sectors Amarcae 7 colony, goes to sleep one night as usual only to wake up in her nightgown stranded in the middle of a forest on an unknown world. There’s no time to think as she’s stalked by carnivorous predators and rescued by genetically engineered warriors calling themselves the Badari. Turns out they and she, along with her whole colony, are now prisoners of the Khagrish, a ruthless race of alien scientists. Working for enemies of the Sectors, the Khagrish have created the Badari to be super soldiers.

Aydarr, the Badari alpha, isn’t sure he can trust Jill but his attraction to her is undeniable. He impulsively claims her as his mate to prevent her death at the hands of the Khagrish.

Can he continue to protect her from the experiments already underway? Will his claiming her put his pack in jeopardy from their alien masters?

As Jill searches for a way to rescue her fellow humans and get them all to safety, she finds herself falling for Aydarr, despite the secrets he’s keeping. She has a few of her own.

The situation becomes dire when Aydarr and his pack are sent offplanet on a mission, leaving Jill unprotected, prey for the senior scientist. Can she escape the experiments he has in mind for her? Will she be able to thwart the Khagrish plans and liberate humans and Badari alike? How will she and Aydarr reunite?

I’ve reached the end of what can be shared from DARIK without giving spoilers so until I have TIMTUR back from edits, I’m going to share a few excerpts from the first book in the series, AYDARR.

The excerpt, from the beginning of the book, follows directly after last week’s:

She remembered eating dinner in her small modular house on the edge of the colony, falling asleep watching an adventure trideo she’d seen a hundred times then…nothing.

“And now I’m here,” She took a closer look at her left arm and did a double take. A black bracelet she’d never seen before was solid against her skin just above the wrist, with no visible hinge or fastening. As she gawked at it, prying at the edges in an increasingly desperate attempt to make the band move, flickers of red and yellow pulsed inside the cool, hard surface. The bracelet and what it might mean scared her more than the loss of short term memory or even the unknown sun.

The roar came again, closer, and was answered by another. Something hunting me maybe?

She pushed away from the tree, realizing she was barefoot, wearing her short, pink-and-black nightgown, molded to her body by the rain. Lingerie was her secret luxury after a day spent in technician’s coveralls, but certainly not suited to this experience. Am I dreaming?

I’ve moved on a bit further from last week and now Darik and his Artificial Intelligence companion are trying to hack into the Khagrish computer system. Darik is speaking.

The excerpt:

“Any estimate how long?”

“This system has unusual parameters, not what I was led to expect. We may be here for an extended duration,” Now the AI sounded annoyed and orange was moving through the turquoise and pink hues, blotting them out on MARL12’s smooth surface.

Plan, meet reality. Conditions in the field invariably varied in ways large and small from what you’d expected at your home base. Probably a good lesson for the MARLs to learn. He just hoped the repercussions weren’t going to be unpleasant for them both. “What kind of ops did your primary unit carry out with your original sentient anyway?”

“Scientific studies of new planets and various astronomical phenomena.”

Darik hid a grin in case MARL12 was monitoring him too, “So, I’m guessing you weren’t a combat unit?”

darik_Veronica_ScottThe blurb:

Nicolle James is far from her home in the human Sectors, kidnapped by alien scientists to be the subject of horrifying experiments.  Her only hope might be a mysterious soldier she’d glimpsed outside the laboratory fence. She’d managed to sneak a few words of conversation with him when her captors weren’t watching but now the aliens were taking her inside the lab to begin the experiments.

Darik, a warrior of the genetically engineered Badari pack, is on a solo recon mission to check out a mysterious new lab high in the mountains. His orders are strict – do not engage. But when he has a chance meeting with the woman who might be his mate, he vows not to abandon her, orders or no orders.

Can he get inside an underground lab, find Nicolle and rescue her without getting captured himself? And when he learns the lab’s deadly secrets, can he get word to his pack about the new dangers?

Because the ruthless alien scientist running the experiments wants to get her hands on him too and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals.
