Today we’ll meet Nicolle, who is being temporarily held in an outdoor area of the alien lab, like a zoo.

The excerpt:

Nicolle stood with her back to the stream running unimpeded through the invisible fence, clutching a forked stick she’d grabbed from the ground as she slipped and scrambled to get away from the beast she was now facing. Holding the unwieldy branch like a trident, she tried to make herself appear bigger and more fierce. A human not to be messed with. Her throat ached from the first few screams of terror, but the sounds only seemed to intrigue the beast, so she bit her lip until she tasted blood. Not a good idea either, Nicolle. Blood probably entices the creature even more.

On all fours now, the animal studied her, sniffing the air as its massive head swayed from side to side.

Will anyone come to help me? But, even if Greer and the others heard her scream and followed her tracks, what could unarmed humans do against this terrifying beast? When the creature stood on its trunk-like hind legs, it was easily 7’ high and the dinner plate sized paws carried multiple hooked claws. Its coat was an odd mix of white, silver and gray, in a camouflage-style pattern that made the animal hard to focus on and the fangs were like daggers.

VS Note: So now we’ve also met a creature like the one whose tracks Darik saw last week.

darik_Veronica_ScottThe blurb:

Nicolle James is far from her home in the human Sectors, kidnapped by alien scientists to be the subject of horrifying experiments.  Her only hope might be a mysterious soldier she’d glimpsed outside the laboratory fence. She’d managed to sneak a few words of conversation with him when her captors weren’t watching but now the aliens were taking her inside the lab to begin the experiments.

Darik, a warrior of the genetically engineered Badari pack, is on a solo recon mission to check out a mysterious new lab high in the mountains. His orders are strict – do not engage. But when he has a chance meeting with the woman who might be his mate, he vows not to abandon her, orders or no orders.

Can he get inside an underground lab, find Nicolle and rescue her without getting captured himself? And when he learns the lab’s deadly secrets, can he get word to his pack about the new dangers?

Because the ruthless alien scientist running the experiments wants to get her hands on him too and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals.

A Promise Weekend Writing Warriors

Warriors logo revisedHere’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

Sharing now from my newest scifi romance  Jadrian (A Badari Warriors SciFi Romance Novel): Sectors New Allies Series Book 3.

Punctuation may be wonky to comply with our guidelines here. May be edited a bit from published version.

I’ve jumped ahead to the point where Jadrian is about to leave her in the care of a medic and return to the fight. Continues directly from last week’s excerpt.

The excerpt:

With great care, he pried her fingers from his as the medic rejoined them, “Wait a minute,” Jadrian said to his comrade. Opening his shirt slightly, he took a leather thong from around his neck and showed Taura the small blue stone pendant, swirls of color suggesting a sleeping cat. “Keep this safe for me. I’ll come reclaim it when I get back to the valley later, all right?”

“I’m not sure I can be trusted,” she said. What if she lost her grip on the stone while sedated, or during a panic attack? Surely he’d be angry if she misplaced his talisman. Being responsible for anything in her current state was a heavy burden yet she knew he meant well by the gesture and she liked the idea he’d have a reason to come find her later.

Jadrian folded her trembling fingers over the cool stone, “I trust you—we have more in common than you know so let this be a promise between us.”

She cradled the stone and thong in her fist, “A promise.”

jadrianThe story:

Taura Dancer has been pushed to her limits by alien torturers known as the Khagrish and is ready to die when suddenly the lab where she’s held as a prisoner is taken down by an armed force of soldiers.

The man who rescues her from a burning cell block is Jadrian of the Badari, a genetically engineered alien warrior with as many reasons to hate the Khagrish as Taura has. This set of shared past experiences and the circumstances of her rescue create an unusual bond between them.

Safe in the hidden base where Jadrian and his pack take her, Taura struggles to regain her lost memories and overcome constant flashbacks during which she lashes out at all who come near. Only Jadrian can recall her from the abyss of her visions and hallucinations.

As the war against the Khagrish continues, it becomes increasingly critical to find out who she really is and how she can help in the fight. Until she can control her terrors and trust her own impulses, Taura’s too afraid to pursue the promise of happiness a life with Jadrian as her mate might offer.

When he’s captured by the dreaded enemy, will she step forward to help save him, or will she remain a prisoner of her past?

SciFi Romance and Ripped Bodice Bookstore’s Summer BINGO

The Ripped Bodice Bookstore in SoCal is conducting their second annual Summer Romance Bingo. I thought it would be fun to take their bingo card of categories and identify scifi romance titles that would satisfy the requirements for readers. I asked the members of The SciFi Romance Group on Facebook to recommend books and definitely allowed authors to recommend their own titles. I said I’d take the first three books to be suggested in each category, which I’ve pretty much stuck to, with a few exceptions noted below.

As the Ripped Bodice notes on their rules, “You can interpret the categories however you want” so we did take a bit of license on a few to fit scifi romance.

To be clear, we’re NOT playing bingo here, merely providing a list of suggestions! Hope over to the Ripped Bodice site if you want to enter their contest, which runs all summer 2018.

And I certainly included a few of my own titles!

It makes for a fun reading list. I’ve included the Amazon links (to book 1 if an entire series is listed) but many of the books are also available on other ebook platforms. I only have so much time in my life to chase down links LOL.

Happy Summer Reading to All!

I’ve jumped ahead to the point where Jadrian is about to leave her in the care of a medic and return to the fight.

The excerpt:

“What’s your name?” she whispered despite the soreness in her throat.

“Jadrian, of the Badari – and you?”

“I don’t know.” Her name was the one precious thing she did remember about herself, but she hadn’t given it to the Khagrish, and she wasn’t ready to give it to anyone, not even her rescuer. She put her free hand to her forehead and gave him a truth as a distraction, “They—the Khagrish—did terrible things to me. Everything’s jumbled in my mind.”

He smoothed her hair away from her face, “They did things to a lot of us. It’s okay, I’m sure you’ll remember details soon enough.”

Taura fought not to recoil from his gentle, well intentioned touch, afraid to irritate the person who’d rescued her, “I didn’t let him win. I couldn’t let him win.”

“You survived, that’s proof enough for me how tough you must be,” His voice was an approving caress.

The excerpt – Jadrian is answering the question from last week, “Where did you find her?” as he carries Taura to safety:

“In the burning cell block, only one there. She’s in pretty bad shape,” His voice was deep, his arms around her comforting.

She leaned her head against his broad chest, clutching his arm, until a spasm of coughing shook her, “I can’t breathe.”

“I’ll get you to the medic, hang on. Take small breaths and hold them, in and then out,” He quickened his pace.

As he ran with her, dodging into cover on occasion as weapons fired, Taura tried not to give into her overwhelming relief at being out of the prison yet. Too soon to allow the tears of joy to fall. For all she knew, these soldiers could be an even worse group to have fallen in with. The men certainly weren’t human and their motives for rescuing her could be just as bad as the Khagrish intentions had been.  She was afraid to trust the hope trying to take root in her mind.

The excerpt:

Taura curled into the smallest ball she could make of herself, hands over her ears as the sound of the pulse rifles in the corridor outside whined and reverberated. Suddenly, a man stepped into the cell, emerging from the swirling smoke like a hero in an adventure trideo. “I’m sure I heard something,” he said over his shoulder to companions she couldn’t see.

Eyes stinging, tears coursing down her cheeks, she reached out, tugging at his pants leg, “Help me, please.”

Shifting his weapon to leave his hands free, the soldier crouched in front of her. His eyes glowed golden as he said, “We’ll get you out, lady.” He picked her up in a single motion, rising to his full height, and hastened from the cell.

“Where did you find her?” another soldier asked her rescuer as he continued to move rapidly away from the building. The entire structure was alight and she shivered at the sight. But for her mysterious hero, she’d have been a casualty and no one would ever have known.

Much more to come of course!

The excerpt:

As a toughened combat veteran, Jadrian of the Badari wasn’t subject to anxiety, but he had to admit moving through a Khagrish lab, and even worse a Khagrish prison block, brought up bad memories. He’d spent time as a younger man undergoing their tortures, kept in isolation from his pack, and the experience had left its scars on him.

The smoke bothered his eyes and lungs less than it might other beings, but it didn’t make for a pleasant environment. He and his teammates swept hastily through the place. The records indicated no human prisoners were kept here, and the force barrier doors had gone down, so it was a quick step into each cell space, checking the corners for any occupant then moving on. Purely an effort to be thorough.

Two Khagrish guards charged into the corridor from the far end, and Jadrian and his teammates scattered, taking cover where they could, returning fire. A cut off scream from the direction of the enemy indicated Jadrian or his compatriots had hit their targets. He grinned fiercely. The Khagrish bred the Badari to possess uncannily powerful vision, even in obscured environments, and now the aliens’ cleverness was coming full circle to bite them.

Next week Jadrian and Taura will meet…

Sharing now from my newest scifi romance  Jadrian (A Badari Warriors SciFi Romance Novel): Sectors New Allies Series Book 3, which released this past week. I decided we’d reached a good place to leave Mateer. Sorry!

Punctuation may be wonky to comply with our guidelines here. Edited a bit from published version.

Starting off with the first ten sentences of the book:

Taura crouched in the corner of her small cell, fists clenched, ready to attack the next person who came into her space, be it Khagrish scientist, lab tech or security guard. Today was her breaking point – she felt the emotion viscerally. She couldn’t endure another procedure or test. No more physical or psychological pain at the hands of the uncaring aliens. She glanced at the black bracelet affixed to her wrist and snarled in rage, like the penned animal she’d become under their torture. Maybe this time she could force them to kill her, and her awful existence would finally end.

Where were her captors? Why wasn’t anyone coming to drag her off to the next horrific ordeal? Now that she was ready to fight them to the death? To relieve her tension and unkink her muscles as she waited, Taura rose and paced the none too generous length of the cell.

We’ll meet the hero next week…

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00068]It’s time to share the gorgeous Fiona Jayde cover with you!

The blurb:

Taura Dancer has been pushed to her limits by alien torturers known as the Khagrish and is ready to die when suddenly the lab where she’s held as a prisoner is taken down by an armed force of soldiers.

The man who rescues her from a burning cell block is Jadrian of the Badari, a genetically engineered alien warrior with as many powerful reasons to hate the Khagrish as Taura has.

This is the third book in a new scifi romance series and each novel has a satisfying Happy for Now ending for the hero and heroine, not a cliffhanger. Some overarching issues do remain unresolved in each book since this is an ongoing series but romance always wins the day in my novels!

The excerpt:

Movement helped her manage the tension but her mood remained on the knife edge of panic.

Gradually, she became aware of strange noises outside her cell, loud booms and the sound of pulse rifles firing in staccato bursts. As grey smoke drifted down from the vent above her head, she moved cautiously along the wall to the edge of the force barrier confining her. There was nothing to be seen in the corridor, other than eddies of smoke. An alarm blared but cut off suddenly.

Was the facility under attack? Had the Sectors finally come to the rescue of their kidnapped citizen? Not likely. Maybe her enemies had their own enemies, though, which might work to her advantage.

Coughing, she covered her face with her arm and croaked out a plea for help. “Here, I’m here!”

Death by fire was a terrifying idea. Her heart raced and her breath came in short gasps, as she couldn’t pull enough air into her chest.

Her head swam from panic and the lack of oxygen.  How ironic, to die with help possibly now at hand. My timing always sucked.

Shapes moved in the corridor, obscured by the smoke which had grown thicker. Her vision swam, blacking in and out.

Taura found herself face down on the cold cell floor.  I must have passed out for a few minutes.

Rising to her knees shakily, one hand on the wall for support, she opened her mouth to yell at whoever was passing by. Surely even the Khagrish wouldn’t be so cruel as to leave her here, trapped in a burning building?

“Please,” she said, inaudible even to herself as she collapsed to the floor.

*****************

“Cover me.” Darik, the team leader, sprinted ahead, laying down suppressing fire just in case. “All clear, both dead,” he yelled a moment later. “We’re done here, time to regroup with the others and blow the place.”

“One more cell to check.” Jadrian turned to the right.

“Hurry it up, there’s no one here, just as the records indicated.” Darik’s clipped tone indicated his impatience to rejoin the rest of the strike force and complete the assault on the installation.

I can’t take the chance of leaving anyone behind. Even his leader’s annoyance couldn’t keep Jadrian from making sure there were no prisoners.

Sharing now from my newest scifi romance Mateer (A Badari Warriors SciFi Romance Novel): Sectors New Allies Series Book 2. Yup, a mouthful LOL!

This excerpt follows directly from last week’s.

The Khagrish are the evil alien scientists holding kidnapped human prisoners for experimentation. Dr. Lampergg is the head of the lab. Mateer is a bioengineeered warrior created by the Khagrish.

The ‘Jill’ they’re talking about was the heroine of book #1, AYDARR.

Punctuation a bit wonky to meet our rules – sorry! Slight differences from the published version, to fit the rules here.

Mateer is speaking.

The excerpt:

“I admire your courageous attitude, given the perilous situation,” he said, face lighting up in a grin for a moment, “All right, since you insist on details, both of your sisters are fine and free in a safe place, but whatever you do, don’t mention you’re related to Jill.”

Megan literally couldn’t breathe and her heart thumped extra hard at the welcome but unexpected news her siblings weren’t prisoners, weren’t being tortured or experimented on. Thank the Lords of Space.  His odd, blunt warning caught her attention next, “Why ever not? What do the Khagrish care who my sisters are?”

Mateer settled back, “She escaped by assaulting the scientist in charge of the labs. Lampergg, the Khagrish directing the operation here, was like a son to Gahzhing, who ran the lab where we were held captive. Gahzhing might even be dead for all I know. Lampergg would be likely to take his anger at Jill out on you.”

That’s my big sister all right, take the fight to the enemy.

mateerThe Blurb:

Megan Garrison, a doctor at the Sectors Amarcae 7 colony, goes to sleep one night as usual only to wake up in her nightgown, strapped to a table in an alien lab, destined to be the subject of terrifying experiments. Granted a brief reprieve, Megan and the other kidnapped humans are released in the middle of a forestlike enclosure on this unknown world and told to survive as best they can for now.

Her only hope is Mateer, the genetically engineered alien warrior imprisoned with the humans. He knows more than he’s sharing about this planet, their captors and the fate of other humans, including perhaps her own sisters. Turns out everyone from her colony has been kidnapped by the Khagrish, a ruthless race of alien scientists. Working for enemies of the human-led Sectors, the Khagrish have created the Badari to be super soldiers.

Mateer, a tough Badari enforcer, now a rebel, is captured while infiltrating the lab to help his pack bring it down. He’s also been ordered by his leaders to search for Megan and save her life at all costs. Tortured by the enemy, he’s offered one chance at survival – convince Megan to become his mate and assist the Khagrish with further experiments.

As the situation at the lab grows worse, Megan struggles against her deep attraction to Mateer, while she does her best to shield the other humans from the terrible Khagrish experiments. For his part, Mateer knows she really is his fated mate and despairs of being able to keep her safe, as the rebel attack is delayed and she fights the truth of their bond.

Will they be able to work together to defeat Khagrish plans and preserve human lives until the promised rescue happens? And what of their future together – will Megan accept Mateer as her true mate, or walk away if she’s freed?
