If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors series: Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens.

The excerpt, continuing on from where I stopped last week:

Five more humans emerged from the core of the building, armed with Khagrish stunners and pulse guns and wearing bits and pieces of Khagrish uniforms, including boots. Each was carrying a makeshift backpack, which she supposed were filled with survival bars and nutrient drinks.

The man in the lead paused beside Mandy.  Rojair, a colonist, as she remembered hazily as he said, “Thanks for getting us out. Where are all the others?”

She pointed to the door, “Running.”

“Listen, you’re welcome to come with us but we got no time to carry you,” He tried to tug her outside, “If you can walk, you can come. I don’t like leaving people behind.”

“What’s the rush?” she asked, twisting her arm in a frantic effort to get free, “My head is still spinning. I haven’t recovered from the stuff the scientist did to me in the medlab a few days ago. But they’re all dead here, right? Can’t you—can’t you stay here tonight, let me get my strength back and then—”

VS: But this guy isn’t our hero….

landonThe blurb: When unexpected circumstances give her a chance to escape from an alien scientist’s lab after she’s been tortured, Mandy Rennegar knew she should run for the hills with the other prisoners. There’s one more special captive who hasn’t been freed, however, and she decides to risk everything to help him. Mandy’s not leaving anyone behind.

Captured by the enemy on a scouting trip, Landon of the Badari has been pushed beyond his limits of sanity and strength by the Khagrish experiments and waits to die…until the human woman sets him free and takes him into the wilderness with her on a desperate trek to freedom. If he could only regain his memory, he’s sure there’s a sanctuary on the planet where his people could help them both.

As Mandy and Landon flee the pursuing Khagrish new challenges arise, including secrets from the past which could destroy the growing attraction between them. Difficult choices have to be made, putting Mandy’s life at risk and Landon discovers the Khagrish have left a lasting mark on his mind.

Will they reach the Badari sanctuary in time? Can their love survive Mandy’s revelations? Will the Alpha of the Badari give them a chance to be together or will he allow her to die when Landon risks everything to save his fated mate?

  1. I’m interested in finding out what happens next. Will she stay or will she go? Definitely, this fellow doesn’t seem like the patient type!

  2. So she helped and now he wants to leave her behind if she can’t walk by herself. He seems like such a great guy. I wish she was strong enough to kick him in the nuts.

  3. Well, surely they could let rest until she gets enough strength back, right? Or at least as Linda said, ‘kick him in the nuts’. I hope you are staying healthy and positive during these difficult times, Veronica.

  4. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Well that’s why I wanted to make sure to be clear this person is NOT our hero. Not to give a spoiler but Mandy will be spending a bit more time at this place. Oh someone asked what the rush was – the escaped human prisoners are assuming the Khagrish authorities will be coming sooner or later to find out what happened to all their people at the lab and the humans are terrified of being caught again.

  5. Yeah, I was thinking she wasn’t going to convince this guy to stay, so I assumed he wasn’t hero material. Can’t wait for that guy to show up! Game changer for Mandy. I just hope it’s soon. Kid needs a break. Great snippet!
