Why do You Ask? Weekend Writing Warriors

Warriors logo revisedI’m taking snippets from my most recently released scifi romance GABE: A Badari Warriors SciFi Romance Novel, the next book in the award winning series. (I’m hard at work on KIERCE by the way…)

Here’s the link to the Weekend Writing Warriors central page, so you can visit all the participants sharing excerpts today…a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! (Also welcome to the Sunday Snippet visitors!)

If you haven’t read any of my Badari Warriors books, here’s the background:

Genetically engineered soldiers of the far future, the Badari were created by alien enemies to fight humans. But then the scientists kidnapped an entire human colony from the Sectors to use as subjects in twisted experiments…the Badari and the humans made common cause, rebelled and escaped the labs. Now they live side by side in a sanctuary valley protected by a powerful Artificial Intelligence, and wage unceasing war on the aliens.

The excerpt – directly after last week’s snippet. Gabe had asked “You’re not planning on turning me over to the Khagrish, are you?”

She shook her head, “Nothing so dire. I left the Retreat—our home base—without permission, as I said. There will be repercussions for me.”

He wasn’t entirely satisfied with her answer. There was something off in her manner when she spoke of the Khagrish. But, if she had valid reasons for being on the run, he didn’t want trouble raining down on her head because she chose to help him, “How serious are the consequences for you?”

Head tilted, she studied him, “Why do you ask?”

“I don’t want you getting into big trouble for me. If I hadn’t literally fallen from the sky you could have made your getaway. You could help me to a spot on the trail these people will take, and then head out again on your own –  I can delay them for you,” His head was pounding with pain from the bump he’d taken and maintaining the discussion was taxing his endurance under the circumstances, but he felt honor bound to make the offer.

gabe badari warriorsThe blurb for GABE: Gabe Carter, hotshot pilot and ex-Special Forces soldier, is far from his home in the human Sectors, kidnapped by alien scientists to be the subject of horrifying experiments. Shot down by the enemy over desolate territory far from his Badari allies and gravely injured, Gabe’s only hope is a mysterious woman on the run herself.

Keshara has to decide whether to abandon the human to die of his injuries on a windswept mountain top or give up her own quest for freedom and take him to a place he can be helped. The undeniable spark between them complicates matters.
His attraction to her is off the charts but when she betrays him to the Khagrish enemy, Gabe doesn’t know what to believe. Trapped inside an alien lab bursting with mysteries and lies, his only hope may be to trust her…again.

Because the renegade alien scientist running her own private experiments wants to use him to accomplish her goals and perpetuate the evil, no matter what she has to do to ensure his compliance. Keshara’s life hangs in the balance and Gabe has to make a choice.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00068]And in other news, I just re-released STAR CRUISE: MYSTERY DANCER as a standalone. It was in the USA Today Best Selling Pets in Space 3 anthology, which has now gone off sale.

The blurb: Tassia Megg is a woman on the run after the death of her elderly guardian. She needs to get off the planet in a hurry when chance directs her to an open dance audition for the luxury cruise liner Nebula Zephyr’s resident troupe. One thing Tassia can do is dance.

Security Officer Liam Austin is suspicious of the newest performer to join the Comettes. She shows all the signs of being a woman on the run and seems to fit the Sectors-wide broadcast description of a missing thief, accused of stealing priceless artifacts. As he gets to know Tassia during the cruise, he starts to wonder if she’s something more – a long vanished princess in hiding from deadly political enemies of her family perhaps?

And what’s the story with the three eyed feline companion other crew members swear Tassia brought aboard the ship? Does the animal even exist?

As the ship approaches its next port of call, all the issues come to a boil and Liam must decide if he’ll step in to help Tassia or betray her. F’rrh the alien cat is the key to the mystery and Tassia’s fate.

A science fiction romance take on the Anastasia tale…

  1. His concern is definitely honorable. But he sounds like he’s in just as much danger as she is. Great snippet! And a beautiful cover for Mystery Dancer!!

  2. Interestingly enough (to me at least) I was just talking with a writer friend today about the concussion she had 15 months ago. It still makes her feel weird sometimes, so it’s easy to imagine that he feels sore and tired.

  3. I really like the default setting for the Badari. They are honorable and good. Kind of puts a reader to mind of Knights–the classic (you know…romanticized) ones. 🙂

  4. Very heroic offer. I wonder if her being a female has anything to do with it? If it was a guy, would he instead offer to fight with him? Are gender roles so very fixed in this world? Great snippet. Made me think!

    • Gabe’s an honorable soldier and would have made the offer regardless of who he was talking to. At this point he thinks he’s dying and doesn’t want the other person to be recaptured on his account. Re the gender roles, no, one member of Gabe’s team in the first book is a kickass exSpecial Forces soldier, Flo (who might get her own book this year – I have a plot just for her), and also in book one of the series, the Badari and the humans were rescued from the main lab by Jill, another former Special Forces soldier. Anybody can do and be anything in the Sectors, or on the Badari planet 🙂

  5. You had me at ‘honor bound’. Are you sure he’s not a Regency gentleman who tumbled through time? A future Mr. Darcy, perhaps? A girl could hope. 😉

  6. Not quite sure what she has in mind, she’s being evasive, but he’s definitely showing an honorable concern for her.

BTW, my browser got hijacked again by an advert while trying to read this snippet. WordPress really needs to curate their advertisers better!
