Weekend Writing Warriors Save your Breath on Zulaire

better wewriwa

We’ve shifted away from Ancient Egypt for a few weeks to my newly released, best selling science fiction romance novel (story blurb below the picture). I’m thinking maybe two more excerpts from this book and then it’ll be time for Ancient Egypt again.

I’m going with an excerpt from a bit further into the book, after the war has broken out and they’re fleeing the burning compound.  Andi has been talking with Sergeant Wilson about the events at the house where she’d been staying, how he and a few of his men escaped when the fight started.  The sergeant is speaking. Although a little creative editing has occurred today,  I’m adhering strictly to the WeWriWa eight sentence rule:

“…We was pretty keyed up. Sure glad you and the captain made it out of the ambush in one piece.”

Andi glanced ahead to where Deverane led the column. If I’d been inside the dance hall when the terrorists attacked, could I have gotten myself out somehow? Would he have been able to rescue me? Having seen the captain in action, she figured he would have found a way, even against dismal odds.

As if the mere mention of his name had conjured him out of the air, Deverane circled back to check on them, saying, “Save your breath, Sergeant, Miss Markriss, we need to make serious time here, not discuss current events.”

And the story blurb:

Andi Markriss hasn’t exactly enjoyed being the houseguest of the planetary high-lord, but her company sent her to represent them at a political wedding. When hotshot Sectors Special Forces Captain Tom Deverane barges in on the night of the biggest social event of the summer, Andi isn’t about to offend her high-ranking host on Deverane’s say-so—no matter how sexy he is, or how much he believes they need to leave now.

Deverane was thinking about how to spend his retirement bonus when HQ assigned him one last mission: rescue a civilian woman stranded on a planet on the verge of civil war. Someone has pulled some serious strings to get her plucked out of the hot zone. Deverane’s never met anyone so hard-headed—or so appealing. Suddenly his mission to protect this one woman has become more than just mere orders.

That mission proves more dangerous than he expected when rebel fighters attack the village and raze it to the ground. Deverane escapes with Andi, and on their hazardous journey through the wilderness, Andi finds herself fighting her uncomfortable attraction to the gallant and courageous captain. But Deverane’s not the type to settle down, and running for one’s life doesn’t leave much time to explore a romance.

Then Andi is captured by the rebel fighters, but Deverane has discovered that Zulaire’s so-called civil war is part of a terrifying alien race’s attempt to subjugate the entire Sector. If he pushes on to the capitol Andi will die. Deverane must decide whether to save the woman he loves, or sacrifice her to save Zulaire.

Science Fiction Romance Brigade Presents Escape From Zulaire

THE SFRB PresentsI’m a proud member of the SFR Brigade so I thought this week I’d take part in the weekly excerpts blog hop.  (The link is here to find other excerpts from novels or WIP written by group members.) The rule is 200 words or less, so here goes with 200 words of my Best Selling SFR novel ESCAPE FROM ZULAIRE.  This scene is when the bad things begin to happen, as they say…(The story blurb is below the excerpt.)

The lights along the path and beside the benches flickered and went out, plunging them into darkness.

Glancing around, Deverane frowned in the moonlight. He released her, keeping one hand around her wrist and putting the other on the butt of his blaster. “Is that normal?”

“The generators have been known to be troublesome in the summer. Probably nothing.” The moment was gone, the spell she’d been under broken. Am I disappointed? Relieved? Things had been moving way too fast between them for people who had just met. “Fortunately, we still have enough moonlight to see the path.” Andi took a step toward the clubhouse.

He tightened his grip on her wrist, forcing her to stop. “Wait.”

Yelling broke out in the large building on the rise behind them. Glaring, sporadic flashes burst from the general direction of the parking area and from the main wing of the celebration hall itself. Making the forest brighter than day, a sizable explosion obliterated the light of the two moons for a moment. Clapping her hands to her ears at the concussion, Andi ducked, crowding into the reassuringly hard-muscled captain.

In one fluid motion, he had his blaster in hand. Still keeping his grasp on her wrist, he drew Andi farther away from the path, taking cover behind a wide, multiple-trunked tree. Placing himself between her and the building, he leaned out, reconnoitering the pathway. The screams and shouts were increasing in intensity and number.

Interview with Djet the Cat From Warrior of the Nile

???????????????????????????????One of my author friends,  Jody Wallace & her cat Meankitty (don’t ask!) have interviewed the cat from my latest Ancient Egyptian paranormal romance, WARRIOR OF THE NILE.

Here’s the first question:

1) So, nameless cat in Warrior of the Nile (whom I’m going to call “Djet” because reasons…and because the author told me it’s your secret cat name as well as the name of an ancient Pharaoh), what do you look like?

I’m a one-eared black tomcat, proudly wearing my battle scars, won in fights up and down the Nile. No sissy harbor cat is going to beat me. I’ve got one green eye and one yellow eye, sharp teeth and claws like knives. No vermin on my ship!

A vision of the atrocity committed on her friend battered Andi. What would I do if I got caught in a similar situation? I didn’t even bring my personal blaster. “I’ll go back to the capital with you in the morning.”

He glared at her, eyebrows drawing together in an impressive frown, forehead wrinkles deepening even more as he said, “Have you been listening, Miss Markriss? We need to leave tonight, the sooner the better.”

The rule is 200 words or less, so here goes with the first 200 words of my Best Selling SFR novel ESCAPE FROM ZULAIRE. (The story blurb is below the excerpt.) The heroine, Andi Markriss, is taking part in a ceremony:

This is the most absurd thing I’ve ever done as assistant planetary agent for Loxton Galactic Trading—standing in as a bridesmaid in a borrowed puce dress because some other girl failed to show up. Andi Markriss sighed, feeling the garment binding too tight across her chest. I didn’t mind representing the company as a guest, but this is way outside the line of duty.

Early afternoon on Zulaire was too warm for an outdoor ceremony, but the Planetary High Lord’s spoiled daughter Lysanda didn’t care to be ready any earlier in the day. Her guests’ comfort wasn’t a consideration.

An inch at a time, Andi shifted from her assigned spot into the shade cast by the towering stone pillars. How did I get talked into this? Oh, yes, Lysanda wept, and her mother made vague threats about her husband reviewing our shipping contracts. As the musicians played, Andi turned, watching Lysanda pace toward the dais in time to the music, smiling for her groom-to-be.

The local priest took a deep breath and launched into a lengthy blessing, invoking the deity and relating the history of the planet’s three Clans—Obati, Shenti and Naranti. Andi chanted along with him under her breath. Overlords, Second Class and Neutrals, as her boss had told her when she’d arrived on Zulaire six years ago. Easy to keep them straight that way, he’d said, but don’t ever slip and use the nicknames out loud.

Release Day Warrior of the Nile

Warrior_ofthe_Nile_finalI’m so happy to say that the Release Day has actually arrived for WARRIOR OF THE NILE, my paranormal novel set in Ancient Egypt. The events are set in  motion by the goddess Nephthys, sister to Isis. Khenet, the Warrior of the title, and Lady Tiya have to work really hard to accomplish the assigned task without dying and still satisfy the demands of the goddess.

Whenever twin goddesses are around, it’s tempting to assume one is Good and the other is Evil. But it’s not necessarily so! In Ancient Egypt Isis was the queen of the gods and represented motherhood, magic and fertility. Worship of this goddess endured for centuries and even spread through the Roman Empire. Wife of Osiris, ruler of the gods, her headdress was shaped like a throne and the pharaohs of Egypt were often depicted as being her children. She was associated with the rebirth that Egyptians expected in their afterlife. Pretty much the good stuff came to Isis.

Her twin sister Nephthys, although not depicted as evil, was associated with death, with battling demons, darkness and dangerous places like the edge of the desert. She and Isis were viewed by the Egyptians as different aspects of the same supernatural power.

One thing that is very useful to me in writing my paranormal novels of Ancient Egypt is the many varying interpretations and legends surrounding all their gods and goddesses, enabling me to pick and choose the aspects that work best with my worldbuilding and then I stay consistent in my choices. Nephthys  doesn’t get things all her own way in my novel – Isis takes a hand in how events turn out, not exactly as her sister had in mind.

Here’s the story overview:

Egypt, 1500 BCE

Lady Tiya is bound to the service of the goddess Nephthys, who plans to sacrifice Tiya’s body to protect Egypt from an ancient terror. She embarks to meet her grim fate alone but for the hardened warrior Khenet, who is fated to die at her side. Tiya’s dreams of love and family now seem impossible, and Khenet, who is the last of his line, knows his culture will die with him. Struggling with the high cost of Nephthys’s demands, both resolve to remain loyal.

Neither expects the passion that flowers when Tiya’s quiet courage and ethereal beauty meet Khenet’s firm strength and resolve. On a boat down the Nile, their two lonely souls find in each other a reason to live. But time is short and trust elusive.

Without the willing sacrifice of Tiya and Khenet, a great evil will return to Egypt. How could the gods demand their deaths when they’ve only just begun to live?

Weekend Writing Warriors Will They Ever See Each Other Again?

better wewriwaThe final excerpt from WARRIOR OF THE NILE, which is being released tomorrow, September 16th! Thanks for all the support along the way…the majority who voted wanted a cliffhanger so that’s more or less what I’m providing today (but remember this is a romance so HEA is guaranteed LOL). Next week I’ll start doing a few weeks from my best selling new SciFi Romance ESCAPE FROM ZULAIRE and then we’ll go back to the Nile with the next book, DANCER.)

Khenet and the goddess Nephthys (hidden in Tiya’s body, while Tiya’s ka [soul] is temporarily banished) wait to enter the city that has been their destination. Nephthys is angry over several things Khenet and Tiya have done on the journey….

“While we wait, mortal, let me assure you, I’ll be allowing my daughter to waken as we share this body. I’ll let her ka watch all that is done to you, before she herself dies, ” Nephthys-Tiya said as she fanned herself with languid motions.

“Why do you hate us so? She’s your descendant and we’re both loyal Egyptians.”

“Appealing to my softer side, pleading for mercy at this late hour?” Nephthys-Tiya was contemptuous.

Through clenched jaw, he made one more attempt to save Tiya,  “Not for myself, but surely you could spare her life!”

“Humans are but tools to accomplish the goal, pawns to play in the game,” the goddess said.

Weekend Writing Warriors Should We Have A Truce?

better wewriwaOnly one more excerpt after today from WARRIOR OF THE NILE because then the book will be released – WHEE!  Can’t decide whether to leave you all on a nonspoiler happy note or a cliffhanger next week for the last excerpt? Any preferences?  For today, here’s another snippet from the conversation Khenet and Tiya have been having, early in their voyage down the Nile:

“Let’s declare a truce. In fact, perhaps we can compare notes on this trip we’ve embarked upon,” Khenet said.

Tiya raised her eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“I know what Pharaoh shared with me, and you know what Nephthys told you, alone in her sanctuary. It won’t surprise me if we each have some puzzle pieces the other hasn’t seen.”

Tiya bit her lip, as she said. “I can’t – Nephthys forbade me to discuss any details, even with you. Especially with you.”

Cover Reveal Dancer of the Nile

DancerOfTheNile_1600x2400I’m really pleased to share the cover for my upcoming October release in the “Gods of Egypt” series: DANCER OF THE NILE. It was so much fun to work with the amazing Frauke of Croco Designs again (she did the cover for PRIESTESS OF THE NILE in 2012).

I’m making a few last minute edits on DANCER so expect to see this title available toward the end of October. (You can sign up for my mailing list to be alerted of new releases, if you like. I promise to be very respectful of your mailbox!)

Here’s the story for my DANCER:

Egypt, 1500 BCE

Nima’s beauty and skill as a dancer leads an infatuated enemy to kidnap her after destroying an Egyptian border town. However, she’s not the only hostage in the enemy camp: Kamin, an Egyptian soldier on a secret mission for Pharaoh, has been taken as well. Working together to escape, the two of them embark on a desperate quest across the desert to carry word of the enemy’s invasion plans to Pharaoh’s people.

As they flee for their lives, these two strangers thrown together by misfortune have to trust in each other to survive.  Nima suspects Kamin is more than the simple soldier he seems, but she finds it hard to resist the effect he has on her heart.  Kamin has a duty to his Pharaoh to see his mission completed, but this clever and courageous dancer is claiming more of his loyalty and love by the moment. Kamin starts to worry, if it comes to a choice between saving Egypt or saving Nima’s life…what will he do?

Aided by the Egyptian god Horus and the Snake Goddess Renenutet, beset by the enemy’s black magic, can Nima and Kamin evade the enemy and reach the safety of the Nile in time to foil the planned attack?

Can there ever be a happy future together for the humble dancer and the brave Egyptian soldier who is so much more than he seems?

And of course we’re getting really close to the September 16th release date for WARRIOR OF THE NILE, which is available for preorder at Amazon. Lots going on, but I like it that way! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
